Die Tour

Today’s walk will take you through the Chiemgau Alps, follow breath-taking trails around the foot of the Rauschberg mountain to Taubensee lake before continuing to Inzell

Today walk from Ruhpolding through the Chiemgau Alps to Inzell. Make your way across farmland, accompanied by the faint sound of cowbells, before reaching the clear blue water of Traubensee where the Rauschberg mountain towers over you. This is a perfect place to plan an alfresco picnic; make sure to pick up some homemade bread from the local bakery in Ruhpolding.

The trail continues deep into the leafy green forest as you follow a well-worn track along the mountainside of the Rauschberg mountain until you reach Inzell.

Weg

The Salzalpensteig trail is very well-signposted. Simply follow the yellow signs with green mountains on them.

START at the tourist information centre in Ruhpolding  – head south and walk along the road until you reach a roundabout. TURN RIGHT on the first road and then TURN RIGHT onto a narrow sandy track that leads over a wooden bridge to the “Vita-Alpina” pool. From here, CONTINUE STRAIGHT towards Wasen.

Once you arrive in Wasen, TURN RIGHT and then immediately TURN LEFT; you’ll find yourself on a narrow meadow path that leads across large fields to Fuchsau. The path turns into an asphalt road. Keep left and you’ll soon reach the settlement of Fuchsau, where you’ll pass the magical Fuxwagnerkapelle chapel on your left.

CONTINUE STRAIGHT and cross a bridge over the Weiße Traun river. TURN RIGHT on the path which follows the river towards Taubensee lake. On this gravel path, cross over the main road once again and TURN LEFT into the woods shortly afterwards. In the ancient woodland, TURN RIGHT then TURN LEFT (“Taubenseerundweg”) to get to the eastern bank of Taubensee lake.

Once you’ve walked halfway around the lake, keep to the RIGHT and CONTINUE through the woods until you reach a crossroads, where you’ll CONTINUE STRAIGHT on. After a short while, the path will lead you out of the woods and into a meadow. TURN RIGHT and continue to follow the gravel path through the woods. Now TURN RIGHT towards Rauschberg and then TURN LEFT towards “leichter Rauschberg”. From here onwards, the route becomes more challenging as you zig-zag up around the foot of Rauschberg mountain through the woods. After the short climb, the woodland path emerges on a road. TURN LEFT onto the road and after a while you’ll come to a bend to the left; keep left and descend. TURN RIGHT (towards Inzell) and you’ll see a stream; follow the path of the stream and TURN RIGHT soon afterwards. When you reach the large crossroads/clearing, take the narrow woodland path CONTINUE STRAIGHT. After a few minutes, head down the woodland road BEAR RIGHT and then TURN LEFT around the next bend.

You’ll end up in a clearing, where you’ll see the beautiful Fahrriesboden chapel. After the clearing, BEAR LEFT and start the short descent into Schmelz. You’ll arrive at Gasthof Schmelz. Walk through Schmelz until you reach a bend in the road, where you cross a small stream, then follow the path of this stream for a while. Continue walking along the edge of the woodland towards Inzell. Again, you’ll cross large meadows as you make your final approach to Inzell.

You have ARRIVED in Inzell, enjoy a well deserved beer
