Hiking Inzell to Bad Reichenhall

Hiking

Bad Reichenhall

Die Tour

Take in the Weißbachfällen waterfall, Höllenbachalm and the deep-blue waters of Thumsee lake as you pass a number of historic brine pipelines before reaching Bad Reichenhall

Enjoy a varied and rewarding walk as today is a long day which takes you through the wild and romantic Weißbachschlucht Gorge. Walk past the deep blue Thumsee, spot the 17th century, wooden brine pipes as you go which mark the historic salt path through the mountains. The brine pipes are considered to be the oldest "pipelines" in the world, the brine was transported via these pipelines to the salt works before being stored and converted into the salt which this region is famous for.

You will reach the alpine spa town of Bad Reichenhall at the end of your day. Enjoy a relaxing evening walk through the Royal Spa Garden, one of Europe's most beautiful landscaped gardens with flowers abundantly present.

Weg

The Salzalpensteig trail is very well-signposted. Simply follow the yellow signs with green mountains on them.

START by walking from Inzell back to Gasthof Schmelz via the walker’s car park. A little further south, pass under the bridge on the former “Deutsche Alpenstraße”; you’ll come out at an adventure playground by the Schmelzbach river.

BEAR LEFT until you reach the long stretch of moorland between Kienberg and Maierknogel. After around a kilometre, you’ll reach Café Zwing. Walk through the underpass to reach the opposite side of the main road (B305) and TURN RIGHT towards Weißbach/Falkenstein onto the Salinen-Rundweg walking route, which is very well-signposted.

A little further down the river, you’ll reach one of the highlights of this leg: the Weißbachfällen waterfall.

CONTINUE STRAIGHT to follow the eastern bank of the Weißbach river downstream for a while. CROSS over a bridge to get to the other side of the river, then keep LEFT until you reach a small house and a parking area. Here, CROSS the river again and CONTINUE STRAIGHT on before CROSS over the river once more to enter a park. After passing the play area, turn onto Öderweg and follow the signs for “SalzAlpenSteig” towards Geislersäge and continue to Gasthof Mauthäusl. Immediately after passing the beer garden at Mauthäusl, pass under the main road and then CONTINUE STRAIGHT onto Salinenweg on the left, which will take you towards the “Höllenbachalm” woodland road.

When you arrive at a large bridge on the “Deutsche Alpenstraße”, TURN LEFT and walk along the Höllenbach river on a woodland road until you reach the Höllenbachalm trail. Then cross a large meadow to rejoin the woodland road in the woodland. You’ll then reach the Höllenbachsteig trail, which will enable you to ascend towards Thumsee lake. CONTINUE STRAIGHT along the Soleleitungsweg trail.

The path starts to snake gently down to the Berggasthof Restaurant Schroffen. From here, continue to descend, following the bend to the right onto the woodland path, which leads to the Saalach river.

When you arrive at the bottom, CONTINUE STRAIGHT on the woodland path until you reach the valley station of the Predigtstuhlbahn cable car; from here, TURN RIGHT and cross the stone Luitpoldbrücke bridge. After crossing the Luitpoldbrücke bridge, go through the underpass, and do NOT turn right, in spite of the SalzAlpenSteig signs (these signs are for the next leg). Instead, walk into the town centre.

On the other side of the road, turn onto Tiroler Straße, which turns into Salinenstraße after approximately two minutes of walking.

The end of the walk, the royal spa house, is located in the royal spa gardens. The tourist information office – which is the destination for today’s leg to Bad Reichenhall – is also close by. The route to the tourist information centre is not marked, so please follow the general signage!

Weitere Informationen

The Weißbachschlucht trail is closed for the entire 2019 season for remedial works. The route has been adjusted accordingly and now uses the Höllenbachalm (Höllenbachsteig) trail. The Höllenbachsteig section can be avoided using woodland paths if you don’t like heights or if the conditions are poor.

Gasthof Schmelz - You can stop for refreshments en route

Thumsee lake - In summer, you can take a dip in it. Don’t forget your swimming costume: https://www.bad-reichenhall.de/thumsee

Predigtstuhlbahn cable car - If you have an additional night in Bad Reichenhall, a trip on the  cable car is well worth the effort: https://www.predigtstuhlbahn.de/startseite

Ausrüstung

We recommend wearing hiking boots that are well broken-in, plus a rain jacket and waterproof trousers in wet weather, as well as taking sun cream and a hat on nicer days.

In your information pack, you’ll find a detailed list of all the required hiking gear, including some good hiking boots, appropriate clothing, a rain jacket and a backpack.
