Start
Bikecenter Garmisch
Ziel
Raffeisen Bank Nassareith
Weg
Ride west from Bikecenter Garmisch (if you just walked out the front door, you would turn left). Continue following this road through town as it transitions to Bahnhofstrasse. Following the creek crossing, curve right and then left as it transitions to St. Martinstrasse. Keeping going and turn right just after the U.S. military base. Then turn left onto the main road, Zugspitzstrasse. You will end up riding along a creek, and on a bike path off to the side of the main road. If you keep your eyes open, you will notice a via ferrata near the waterfall along the way.
Follow the bicycle signs toward Griesen, Ehrwald (Austria!), and Biberwier. In Ehrwald, you meet up with the official Via Claudia Augusta route and the signage should improve.
From Biberwier, you now start your climb up and over the Fern Pass. This is your steepest climb of the journey, and it climbs on a gravel road. There is a good chance that some members of the group may end up walking and pushing through part of this climb. The trail flattens out once and then climbs again before reaching the top of the pass, which is rather anticlimactic.
The descent from the pass is steep and loose. Those with mountain biking experience and some basic braking technique are likely to enjoy it, while others may choose to walk sections. The descent takes you straight into Nassereith. This stage ends at the Raffeisen Bank in Nassareith. Further details about your accommodation are included in your Adventure Plan.
Note: Be sure to stay on the gravel bike route over Fern Pass, which does not spend any time on the road. Cycling on the road up and over Fern Pass is very dangerous and should be avoided.
