Walk to Königssee

Walk around the foot of Watzmann mountain

Konigsee

Die Tour

Embark on a walk which takes you around the foot of Watzmann mountain to Königsee.

The ascents and descents make today's walk the toughest, but the most rewarding walk of the trip. After a hearty breakfast take a short bus ride (15 min) to Ramsau.

Following the brine pipeline which is transporting salt from the salt mines, along the foot of the Watzmann. Enjoy the magnificent views of the majestic, clear blue Königsee Lake and the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Your walk comes to an end at the shoreline of Königsee Lake, take a boat trip on the lake (payable locally) and visit the iconic 12th century St. Bartholomä church which is known for serving freshly smoked trout.

The local bus will bring you back to Berchtesgaden, where you can Prost to finishing the trail with locally brewed beers and a pretzel before saying goodbye to the wonderful scenery.

Ziel

Weg

The Salzalpensteig trail is very well-signposted. Simply follow the yellow signs with green mountains on them. (See your information pack for a picture)

A short bus journey (approximately 15 minutes) will take you to Ramsau. This is the starting point for the stretch of the Salzalpensteig trail running from Ramsau to Königssee.

Take bus 846 and disembark at the church in Ramsau. Your guest card gives you free travel on bus 846 to the church at Ramsau. In the summer, the bus departs every half an hour (09:15, 09:45 etc.)

START In front of the church, TURN RIGHT onto Schluchtweg. Follow the ascending road until you reach the “Zipfhäusl” (250 metres). Behind the Zipfhäusl, TURN RIGHT into the woods and CONTINUE STRAIGHT towards Gerstreit. You’ll soon come across a bridge that crosses a waterfall. You’ll also pass Gasthaus Gerstreit; cross the beer garden to continue to follow Soleleitungsweg further into the woods.

On a sharp right-hand bend, cross the Landtalgraben and walk along the base of the Söldenköpfl (1022 m) until you reach Bachmanngraben, following Soleleitungsweg at all times. When you reach a fork in the road, BEAR LEFT and leave Soleleitungsweg to continue towards Engedey. When you leave the woods, walk through a small settlement to join Ramsauer Straße.

TURN RIGHT and continue for a few metres before TURN LEFT again to cross the Ramsauer Ache river. After the bridge, keep to the right and follow Brandweg for a short distance, TURN LEFT after passing the first two houses. Follow the gravel path into the woods. You’ll then walk across meadows and re-enter the woods for brief periods until you reach Hammerstiel car park. From here, BEAR LEFT into the woods. The route now slopes steadily upwards along a small stream. The woodland path leads you to a fork in the road. BEAR LEFT and cross a small stream. The route now winds relatively steeply upwards through idyllic mixed woodland until the gravel path brings you out at Grünsteinhütte inn.

It’s a good idea to take a break here at the Grünstein summit to enjoy the breathtaking views of the valley and mountains. The route to Schönau am Königssee then continues to the right, back towards the valley.

Pause once in a while to take in the views of Grünstein; you can usually see climbers tackling the steep face of the mountain. The trail eventually becomes a gravel path, which crosses Klingerweg and takes you past the famous Königssee bobsleigh and sledge run. After passing the run, walk to the left along the edge of the woods. After a few metres, you’ll reach the Königsseer Ache river. CROSS the RIver and TURN RIGHT after the bridge to walk along the bank of the Königssee lake..

The local bus will bring you back to Berchtesgaden, where you can Prost to finishing the trail with locally brewed beers and a pretzel before saying goodbye to the wonderful scenery.

You can pause for refreshments en route at Berggasthof Gerstreit or Söldenköpfl (closed on Fridays).

If you want to go off the beaten tourist track at Königssee lake, we recommend turning right before the bridge. You’ll end up at the “Echostüberl” at the end of the road. Further information on Königssee lake can be found at: https://www.koenigssee.de/home  You can also go on a boat trip on the lake: https://www.seenschifffahrt.de/de/koenigssee/fahrplan/fahrplan/
