Wegbeschreibung

Start

Gasthof Bärnstatt in Scheffau

Ziel

Gaudeamushütte

Weg

0.00 km – Start from Gasthof Bärnstatt bus stop. With the guesthouse behind you, TURN RIGHT onto the gravel path towards the car park (signpost 821 towards ‘Steiner Hochalm’). Go past the car park towards the forest and keep following the signs towards ‘Steiner Hochalm’ 821.

1.10 km – Continue following the signpost towards ‘Steiner Hochalm’ TO THE LEFT. Do not go straight on through the gate.

WARNING: Narrow sloping path. Take care not to slip!

1.70 km – You will reach Steiner Hochalm. Go LEFT towards the buildings and TURN RIGHT at the signpost for trail 821/823 towards Kaiser Hochalm.

1.80 km – After the houses, follow the gravel path STRAIGHT ON across the field. Do not follow the main path downhill.

2.20 km – At the signpost for ‘Krumpenbachleitner’, continue following trail 821/823 STRAIGHT ON towards Kaiser Hochalm.

2.70 km – At the end of the forest path, TURN LEFT on trail 821/823 and walk uphill. From this point you will see signs for the Gruttenhütte hut.

3.50 km – You can fill your water bottles from the spring at Kaiser Hochalm. Walk between the buildings until you reach the signpost. TURN RIGHT when you reach it and follow the path towards Gruttenhütte.

WARNING: High levels of concentration and sure footing are required on the Grutten path which you follow from Kaiser Hochalm to just before the Gruttenhütte hut. The narrow mountain path runs tightly along the escarpment and there are slippery tree roots, boulders and scree to cross at regular intervals.

4.80 km – You will reach a clearing with a large rock and a bench. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD here.

7.90 km – The narrow path joins a wide gravel path via steep, well-defined steps. TURN LEFT here and keep walking uphill towards Gruttenhütte, which you can already see on the left on the slope.

Note: If you are not staying in the Gaudeamus or Gruttenhütte hut, TURN RIGHT and descend towards Wochenbrunner Alm.

9.10 km – Why not take a break at the Gruttenhütte? You are at the highest point of the walk. Go beyond the hut and take two RIGHT turns when you come to the signposts towards Gaudeamushütte.

9.40 km – At the next junction (Gruttenhütte/Klamml), keep LEFT towards Gaudeamushütte via the Klamml-Steig trail.

WARNING: The path becomes difficult from this point. A good head for heights and sure-footedness are essential for this last section. If you don’t have the confidence to take the steep descent, you must take a large detour around the Wochenbrunner Alm.

Stick to the red trail signs at all times. At the escarpment, take the first RIGHT to descend through the Klamml gorge. Do not go straight ahead through the steep, well-defined escarpment.

9.60 km - At the exit of the Klamml gorge, TURN LEFT and keep to the gravel path until it joins a small scrambling route secured with supporting chains (with a ladder at the end) into Tal.

From this point, keep following the red signposts and markers STRAIGHT AHEAD towards Gaudeamushütte, which you will soon be able to see in the distance.

10.80 km – You have reached your destination for today – the Gaudeamushütte hut.

Weitere Informationen

The Wilder Kaiser Mountain Range

The Wilder Kaiser mountain range in the Tyrolean Alps is shrouded in mystery, its majestic peaks the subject of countless stories, myths and legends. Numerous theories abound as to how the "Koasa" (German: Kaiser) got its name. Some say the distinctive peaks and silvery colour of the limestone give the mountains the look of an imperial crown. According to another tale, the Emperor Karl found his final resting-place high up on the mountainside and has kept watch over these peaks and those seeking to conquer them ever since. Just two of the many theories that exist!

Gruttenhütte

On clear days, the Gruttenhütte mountain hut high above Ellmau and Going offers magnificent views of the Grossglockner und Grossvenediger mountains. It is definitely worth taking a short breather here before the final descent to the Gaudeamushütte. More info can be found here: https://www.gruttenhuette.at/

Gaudeamushütte

The Gaudeamushütte also offers unmissable panoramic views. We recommend you grab a plate of “Kaiserschmarren” and a well-deserved beer and head to the terrace to watch the sun go down! Ausrüstung

Always wear good walking boots with a robust sole, and take waterproofs with you. Take plenty of water with you (min. 1 litre) and don’t forget sunscreen!

Sicherheitshinweise

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.

Warning: The descent from the Gruttenhütte via the ‘Klamml’ gorge is very difficult and involves narrow trails (see picture). A good head for heights and sure-footedness are essential for this last section. If you don’t have the confidence to take the steep descent, you must take a long detour back towards Wochenbrunner Alm and from there, climb back up the trail to Gaudeamushütte. If you are contemplating taking the detour, plan for an additional hour of walking.

Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The specified walking times only refer to the actual time spent walking. Breaks for photos and rest need to be added to the specified times.

Make sure you find out about current weather conditions and keep an eye on weather changes. Thunderstorms can gather very quickly in the Alps.

Do not leave the designated hiking trails!
