Weg
ARRIVE at the railway station in Prien am Chiemsee, where the first leg of your Salzalpensteig begins. From Wessner Hof, take bus 9505 to Prien Bahnhof (Prien station) to start the walk.
Walk alongside the train tracks for a short distance before TURN LEFT on to the main road in front of the large car park. Continue STRAIGHT along this road for a while before TURN LEFT on to Martin-Luther-Straße.
CONTINUE STRAIGHT on until you come across a beautiful evangelical church. Behind the church, BEAR RIGHT ascending into the woodland ahead of you.
You are now in a conservation area close to the Herrenberg hill, which is home to the “Alte Villa”, whose walls and towers are just a short walk away through the meadows and woodland. If you choose to walk around the park walls of the villa, you’ll see Chiemsee lake in the distance; continue your descent towards the upmarket residential district of Ernsdorf.
When you reach the large farm TURN LEFT and then immediately TURN RIGHT on the first road to your right. CONTINUE STRAIGHT until you reach an old farmhouse; follow the asphalt path behind the house into the fields. The route bends round to the left; continue towards Moosweg, following the sign under the oak tree.
CONTINUE STRAIGHT on along the hedges until you reach woodland with oak and birch trees and open meadows (Harraser Moos conservation area). At the crossroads in the woods, TURN LEFT and then continue along the gravel path through the woods. When you reach a small settlement, TURN RIGHT, cross the main road and then TURN LEFT into the road leading to the campsite. TURN RIGHT onto the path before the campsite to reach the banks of Chiemsee lake. CONTINUE to follow the stream then TURN LEFT across the bridge into the conservation area.
You’ll see another larger bridge, which you should also cross. At the next crossroads, CONTINUE STRAIGHT on and you’ll reach a gravel path that will take you through the moorland. Follow the track to the LEFT and you’ll come to a bridge. TURN LEFT again (towards Chiemseepark Felden, Bernau) and continue across the many bridges through the moorland. Near the motorway, you’ll reach a stretch of birch trees. TURN RIGHT and continue towards Bernau. When you reach the motorway, follow the banks of the Bernauer Ache to pass through the motorway underpass before immediately crossing under the main road. CONTINUE STRAIGHT to follow the Bernauer Ache RIver, and TURN RIGHT towards the centre (station) at Baumannstraße.
Follow Schwertstraße – walking along a beautiful chestnut tree-lined avenue – to reach the town hall, then cross over the spa gardens and TURN RIGHT at Ferdinand-Bonn-Straße.
At Gasthof “Alter Wirt”, CROSS the B305 (towards Aschau) to reach the Bernau tourist information office by Chiemsee lake. At the tourist information office, TURN LEFT onto Stachel-Peter-Weg, which comes out on Mitterweg. From here, CONTINUE STRAIGHT towards Kraimoos.
On arrival in Kraimoos, follow signs for Bergham (viewing point). Follow the farm track across the large meadow until you reach a rest area with two benches. BEAR RIGHT along Salinenweg. After passing through a few farms, TURN LEFT at a roadside chapel to start your ascent. The path ascends and then descends towards Adersberg and Rottau. It’s worth taking a detour to the water tower on the left for spectacular views of Chiemsee lake.
The Salzalpensteig trail CONTINUES STRAIGHT on towards Rudersberg. You can take a break at the Salzalpensteig rest point at the chapel, or continue for a further 200 metres to Gasthaus Wastlbauerhof. Passing to the left of Wastlbauerhof, CONTINUE STRAIGHT on through the meadows. Then cross the small road heading down to the right before BEAR RIGHT to ascend again. At this point, the path slopes continually uphill. After a short time, TURN LEFT onto a narrow, steep path that snakes downhill. When you reach the bottom, you’ll be on the banks of the Grießenbach river.
Continue to ascend above the woodland road on your LEFT, CONTINUE STRAIGHT on through the woods and passing the old brine pipelines. At the next crossroads, BEAR RIGHT to the path which with a few steps that steeply ascend to reach “Strehtrumpf”.
You’ll arrive at an idyllic pond by a scout hut and walk through a settlement. In Kucheln, TURN RIGHT onto the main road.
