Wegbeschreibung

Weg

Summary: Continue following the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg until Altenau. Here transition to signs for Unterammergau, Oberammergau and then Ettal.

Continue following the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg across the Isar River, as it gently climbs through town. Eventually you will find yourself in the spa and health center of Bad Tölz, which the city is famous for.

Continue following the signs, finding yourself on a bicycle path that runs along a large highway. Follow this as you come up to a ski area. They run an alpine slide in the summer.

Eventually, the route will turn gently downhill toward Bad Heilbrunn. This section is very well signed out. Continue toward Benediktbeuern, where you will pass a monastery with a beer garden, a great stop if the timing works for you.

Continue to Kochel am See, following the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg to Ohlstadt, and then to Eschenlohe. In Eschenlohe, the route crosses under the autobahn and travels through farmland. Continue following the signs for Bad Kohlgrub, ascending gradually, with a few more persistent ascents as you near Bad Kohlgrub.

In Bad Kohlgrub, continue following the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg uphill through town, now signed for Saulgrub. After Saulgrub, you'll head downhill on a small road meeting a slightly larger road, where you'll turn right. Turn right here onto the road and not onto the bicycle path on the opposite side (you'll figure it out if you take the bicycle path, but it pretty much peters out and has an unneccessary steep hill before it ends).

!!In Altenau you will split from the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg!!

After the enjoyable downhill into Altenau, you'll arrive at a bridge with a small pond on the left. Here, the Bodensee-Königsee Radweg turns right. You are going to continue straight onto the Ammer Amper Radweg (AAR) toward Unterammergau and Oberammergau.

In Oberammergau you'll continue straight at the road crossing, following signs now for Ettal, continuing to follow the Ammer River. At a small bridge that crosses over the river, you'll turn left, following signs for Ettal. Shortly thereafter, you'll arrive at the Ettaler Mühle, a great stop for lunch or an alcohol-free beer.

From the Ettaler Mühle, cross the road, and turn left on a trail the parallels the road. Turn right when meeting the large road, staying on the trail that runs parallel. For the last section as you come into Ettal, you'll ride on the road until arriving at the monastery in Ettal, where they brew beer. Ettal is beautifully set in the mountains with an impressive monastery. Their beer is our favorite in all of Germany.

Alternative: It is possible to take the train between Murnau am See up and Oberammergau.
