BT3 Stage 1 - Munich to Erding
Die Tour
The day begins with a comfortable route through Munich, mostly through the English Garden, and then continues north along the Isar River. At Ismaning, the bicycle leaves the Isar River Trail, and transitions onto the Semt-Isen Bicycle Route, which travels mostly on paved country roads with very little traffic. The Sempt-Isen route is poorly signed out through Ismaning, but the signage quickly improves. Take this route into the old center of town in Erding, and drop off your luggage at your hotel before heading to the brewery tour (if this is included in your itinerary).
Autorentipp
There are several beer gardens along the way on this day. In the English Garden, you will pass the famous Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm), the beautiful Lake House beer garden (Seehaus), and the Hirschau beer garden. In Ismaning, you will have an additional option to stop at the Zur Mühle Beer Garden. This is also the last lunch stop before arriving at your destination in Erding.
Please remember that there is a blood-alcohol limit for riding your bicycle in Germany of 1.6 parts per thousand (grams per kilogram). Although this route avoids high-traffic roads, it does still travel on roads with vehicle traffic, and it is important to remain aware and responsive for your own safety and for the safety of others.
Alcohol free beer is also a part of the beer culture here in Germany. We recommend enjoying as many alcohol free beers as you can along the way, and also an occassional Radler. A Radler is beer mixed with lemonade, and the term "Radler" means cyclist. This is a light and refreshing drinking option designed specifically for you.

Weg
This tour starts at Marienplatz, the historic central square in Munich. Take a moment to admire the gothic details on the impressive City Hall (Rathaus). Continue toward Odeonsplatz. Upon arriving at Odeonplatz, don't forget to turn around and admire the Feldhernhall, a monument to the Bavarian Army. Just past the Feldhernhall, turn right into the Hofgarten. At the far end of the Hofgarten, you will take a left turn up a short ramp, which will eventually take you down into a tunnel. You emerge from this tunnel in the English Garden.
If you want to check out Munich's surfing scene, take a quick detour to the right after emerging from the tunnel. Stay in the park along the stream, and you will come back to the Eisbachwelle, a "wave" in a stream. This is the only option for Munich's surfers, whom can be seen riding their bicycles through the city while wearing a wetsuit and carrying a surf board.
Once you have experienced the surfing scene, return to the main trail, and continue through the English Garden to the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) Beer Garden. Routing can get somewhat confusing in the English Garden, as there seem to be trails everywhere. Your main route follows signs first to Oberföhring. You will eventually see the Isar Dam on the river. You want to cross this, and then continue heading north (left). Care should be taken while crossing the dam. Please shift down and give pedestrians the right of way.
Continue past Unterföhring and then to Ismaning, looking for the signage for the Sempt-Isen Bicycle Trail (this is just a short ways after the third pedestrian bridge, which is a beautiful, wood, suspension bridge).
Note: If you missed crossing the Isar Dam, don't worry. You still have a few opportunities to cross to the east side of the river before your route leaves the Isar River Trail. Continue to look for signs to Oberföhring until you cross the river. If you don't see any, follow signs to the Stadium (Stadion) first, and then transition to Freising signs. Cross the first bridge you see, and continue north (left) toward Ismaning.
Turn right, away from the river, at the junction with the Sempt-Isen Bicycle Route. This will eventually lead you into a neighborhood. Turn right at the "T" and climb a short hill, following this road as it curves to the left. Go straight at the traffic light, and continue past a small grocery store, ice cream cafe, butcher (warm sausages and schnitzl available - butchers are a great, affordable fast food option in Germany). Turn left at the T-intersection. The official route then takes and immediate right onto Bahnhofstrasse.
If you go straight here for just a few meters, turn right after Hotel Post for Gasthof zur Mühle, and take a stop at the Beer Garden for lunch. This is your last lunch stop before Erding.
Continue on the route through town. Turn left after the bicycle shop onto Doktor-Schmitt Strasse, passing a small hardware store. Turn right onto An der Torfbahn Strasse.
Note: If you stop at the beer garden, you can short-cut to this spot, by taking the road that travels along the Kirchplatz (Church Place) from the back of the beer garden. This will T at Doktor-Schmitt Strasse. Take a left onto the route, and then an immediate right onto An der Torfbahnstrasse.
Continue following An der Torfbahnstrasse. It will eventually cross over the highway on a bridge and bring you into farmland. Don't worry, you will see the Alps tomorrow.
From here, the Sempt-Isen Bicycle Route is well-signed out to Erding. Follow it through the tiny village of Eicherloh, along the edge of Moosinning (you will pass a Rewe grocery store here - go straight across the street after the Rewe), and then through Schnabelmoos and Kempfing. There are two spots that are not clearly signed, and in both of these locations, simply go straight.
As you approach Erding, pass the large complex of Therme Erding. Turn left on Münchnerstrasse, and follow this into the old city center (Altstadt or Zentrum). This stage ends at Hotel Erdinger Weissbräu, which is on the left, just past the open square (which is on the right).
If you have a brewery tour in your itinerary (this is dependent on timing), from the hotel, continue riding to the north (away from the direction you came), turning left on Freisinger Strasse. Cross the stream, and continue as the road curves to the right, and then to the left. Continue straight on this road as it transitions to Pennweg, and then turn right on Franz-Brombach Strasse. Look for the brewery gift shop on the right.
Weitere Informationen
Erding is home to one of the largest indoor/outdoor water parks in Germany, Therme Erding. It consists of an indoor/outdoor waterslide park, an indoor/outdoor pool sourced from hot springs, and the largest sauna facility in the world. We love Therme Erding, and recommend a 2 to 3 hour visit if you have the time. If you plan to visit the saunas, we recommend reading about the German sauna culture in advance (the saunas are "clothing-free").
