Wegbeschreibung

Start

Via Claudia Augusta Bridge over the Sanna River in Landeck

Ziel

Catholic Church in Reschen

Weg

Take the bridge across the Sanna river, and continue on this road, Burschlweg. From here you will be climbing uphill most of the day, until reaching Reschen Pass, which markes the Austrian-Italian border.

The first part of your climb is on a lonely road that ascends the valley above the Inn River with beautiful mountain views. Eventually the route crosses a bridge, and you will have about 2 km. of riding in a bike lane along the main road. Despite the fact that it is a main road, there is little traffic. You will cross the river many times as you continue the gradual ascent to the pass.

We recommend a stop at the Biergarten in Pfunds for lunch. The Bike Shuttle, if you are using it, picks up across the street from the church in Pfunds, Stuben (on the west side of the river) at a normal bus stop. This is just up the road from the Tourist Information Office.

Not long after Pfunds, you end up riding on a road without a bike lane. There is not a lot of traffic here, but there are some short tunnels where you need to be cautious, and ensure you have your lights on. Shortly thereafter, you will cross into Switzerland, and at the border crossing back into Austria at Martina, turn left for your climb up a switch-backed road to Nauders (if you take the shuttle you miss Switzerland entirely). You have 11 switchbacks to the saddle – Norbertshöhe.

At Norbertshöhe, you will forget all the hard work it took to get to this point. Enjoy the downhill roll into the charming mountain village of Nauders, taking some time to enjoy the views and the village if you have it. These are some of the best views of the entire tour. Nauders is the dropping off point for the shuttle.

From Nauders, the route continues to climb, although more gently. Enjoy the high meadows and mountain views, as you cycle your way across the border into Italy and end your day at the famous Reschen Lake. This stage ends at the Catholic Church on the main road in Reschen. Specific directions to your hotel from here are included in your Adventure Plan.

You are now in the German-speaking region of Italy. Be aware that almost all towns, rivers, mountains, etc. have two names: one in Italian and one in German. Sometimes they are similar, and sometimes they are not This can be very confusing.

Weitere Informationen

Note: Lake Reschen (also called Lake Rescia) is famous for its submerged clock tower, the last remaining structure of the village that was flooded when the lake was formed.

Alternative: You can bypass most of the climbing with a bike shuttle that will pick you up in Pfunds, or even in Landeck if you want to bypass almost the entire day of cycling. This is a good option for those who are not 100% physically ready for the day, or for those who are extremely uncomfortable riding on a road. The shuttle drops you off in Nauders, leaving only 7 ½ km. and 156 m. of ascent to your hotel. The shuttle departs the Landeck train station at 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:12 pm, 2:00 pm, and 4:00 pm. The departures from Pfunds Stuben, just across from the church (up the road from the Tourist Information Office, marked with an "i") are always 52 min. after the Landeck departures. You need to order the shuttle by text message 24 hours in advance. Here is how you order the shuttle:
