Pass this small picturesque lake
Cairns on the river bank
The Griessbachalm

Die Tour

This varied circular route gives you yet another perspective on the Kitzbüheler mountains. The highlight of today’s walk is the path through Grießbachklamm gorge, where there is plenty of opportunity for exploration and lots to discover. There are also two welcoming lodges en route for you to take a break.

Right at the start of the hike, you’ll pass the rocky ravines of Grießbachklamm gorge. The walk then takes you over wooden bridges, suspension bridges and along the banks of the river, deeper into the forest. After a short but steep climb, you’ll reach the alpine lodge area, where you can catch your breath in the company of a small selection of farm animals. You will then descend back to your starting point, where you can take the bus to St. Johann

Autorentipp

Stop at Angerlalm Lodge, which has its own home-made buttermilk and goats wandering in the garden.

Anreise

Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel

Make your way to the train station in St. Johann. A bus to Erpfendorf departs from this station multiple times a day (line 4012 to Lofer/Salzburg, journey time approx. 12 minutes; free with your Guest Card). Do not get off the bus in Erpfendorf – stay on for one more stop. You will then be dropped off at the “Forstamt”, the forestry office where the Grießbachschlucht ravines begin. At the end of your circular walk, you will arrive back here. You can take the same bus line back into St. Johann. Make sure you check the timetable, as the bus isn’t as frequent in the afternoons.

Weitere Informationen

On this route, there are two lodges where you can stop off for a break above the gorge. Angerlalm Lodge, which is located shortly after the end of the climb up, is highly recommended. Alternatively, you can keep walking for around 30 minutes until you reach Huberalm Lodge.

Ausrüstung

Always wear good shoes/boots with a robust sole, and take waterproofs with you. Take plenty of water and don’t forget sunscreen!

Sicherheitshinweise

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.

A number of sections of this walk pass through fields containing livestock. Always look out for animals when entering a field. Keep your distance from the animals and remember to close gates after you.

Remember that the ground inside the gorge can be wet and slippery. Do not enter the gorge in a storm or after flooding, and read the safety information at the entrance.
